నేను CION క్యాన్సర్ క్లినిక్స్, బంజారా హిల్స్‌లో మెడికల్ ఆంకాలజిస్ట్‌గా పనిచేస్తాను. మెడికల్ ఆంకాలజిస్ట్ అంటే మందులతో, అంటే కీమోథెరపీ, ఇమ్యునోథెరపీ, టార్గెటెడ్ థెరపీ, హార్మోన్ థెరపీతో క్యాన్సర్‌ను చికిత్స చేసే వైద్యుడు. సర్జరీ లేదా రేడియేషన్ అవసరమైతే, ఆ నిపుణులతో కలిసి మీ సంరక్షణను సమన్వయం చేస్తాను. I work as a medical oncologist at CION Cancer Clinics in Banjara Hills. A medical oncologist is the doctor who treats cancer with medicines, that is chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy. When surgery or radiation is needed, I coordinate your care with those specialists rather than work alone.

నా దగ్గరికి వచ్చే చాలా మంది రోగులు గందరగోళంలో, భయంతో వస్తారు. వాళ్ళకు రోగం ఏమిటో తెలుసు, కానీ అదేంటో, ఎందుకు ఆ చికిత్స అవసరమో అర్థం కాదు. ఆ ఖాళీని పూరించడమే నా మొదటి పని. రోగికి, కుటుంబానికి నిజంగా అర్థమైందని నాకు అనిపించే వరకు నేను ముందుకు వెళ్ళను. Many patients reach me confused and afraid. They know they have cancer, but not what it really is or why the treatment is needed. Filling that gap is the first part of my job. I do not move forward until I feel the patient and the family have genuinely understood.

నేను రిపోర్ట్‌తో మొదలుపెట్టను, రోగితో మొదలుపెడతాను. స్టేజ్ ఎంత, ట్యూమర్ ఎక్కడ ఉంది, ఎందుకు ఈ మందు ఎంచుకుంటున్నాం, ఏమి ఆశించవచ్చు — ఇవన్నీ మామూలు తెలుగులో చెబుతాను, అవసరమైతే ఒక బొమ్మ గీస్తాను. వైద్య పదజాలంతో రోగిని గందరగోళపరచడం నాకు ఇష్టం ఉండదు. I do not start with the report, I start with the patient. What the stage is, where the tumour sits, why we are choosing this medicine, what to expect, I go through all of it in ordinary Telugu, and I draw a small diagram when it helps. I do not like to confuse a patient with medical jargon.

కీమో మొదలుపెట్టే ముందు, ఏ సైడ్ ఎఫెక్ట్‌లు సాధారణం, ఏవి వస్తే వెంటనే ఫోన్ చేయాలో కుటుంబానికి స్పష్టంగా చెబుతాను. ఇంట్లో రోగిని చూసుకునేది వాళ్ళే, వాళ్ళకు స్పష్టత ఉంటే రోగికి ధైర్యం వస్తుంది. నేను తొందరపడి మందు రాయడం కంటే, ఒక మిగిలిన పరీక్ష కోసం ఒక రోజు వేచి ఉండటం మంచిదని నమ్ముతాను, ఎందుకంటే ఆ ఒక్క రిపోర్ట్ మొత్తం ప్లాన్‌ను మార్చగలదు. Before chemotherapy begins, I tell the family clearly which side effects are normal and which ones mean call me straight away. They are the ones watching the patient at home, and when they have that clarity, the patient feels braver. I would rather wait a day for a missing test than rush a prescription, because that one report can change the whole plan.

నేను కుటుంబంతో నిజాయితీగా మాట్లాడతాను. ఒక చికిత్స ఎంత సహాయపడుతుంది, దాని పరిమితులు ఏమిటో చెబుతాను, ఎందుకంటే తప్పుడు ఆశ ఇవ్వడం రోగికి న్యాయం కాదు. ఎవరైనా సెకండ్ ఒపీనియన్ తీసుకోవాలనుకుంటే, నేను దాన్ని స్వాగతిస్తాను. I speak honestly with families. I tell you how much a treatment is likely to help and where its limits are, because giving false hope is not fair to a patient. If anyone wants a second opinion, I welcome it.
